Traditional Musical Instruments
Calimbas, often called thumb pianos, are the traditional instruments
of the Mbire people of Sotho.
Each instrument is as personal and unique as the human voice. Simple
in principle, simple in design and rich in sound; the calimba
is made by setting hand-beaten and -tuned lamellas (metal keys)
into a decorated wooden base.
The tuning depends on the number, length and taper of the lamellas
which are flexible, allowing for tuning according to individual
taste.
Sizes, colours and designs may vary from those illustrated.
